Day 9 - Makarora to Wanaka

I was awake before the sun was up after a solid sleep and excitement over the next final few days. We had our porridge breakfast drizzled in honey and a cup of tea before packing up the bikes and heading south. We hugged the side of the mountains following the Makarora-Lake Hawea Rd. The road bought some rolling inclines, not too tough but a nice morning wake up call to get the legs moving. Shortly after we left our campsite we veered to the left and found ourselves with yet another incredible view.

We passed trough The Neck. Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea run parallel to each other with two mountains split between the two. The Neck is a small pass that runs from Lake Wanaka to Lake Hawea and splits between the two mountains. What does this mean? Amazing views!

We continued following the road with very little traffic and spent more time looking at this world famous scenery and not the road in front! A small lunch break by the lake and we were off again steaming towards Wanaka. This small town borders the lake and is also a base point for many skiers and snowboarders to reach many of the ranges around them. We found a YHA which offered ‘Green Rates’ as we were travelling environmentally friendly. We treated ourselves to an Indian Curry and some cold beers as we started to take in the mountain lifestyle evident by the young snow-chasing folks strolling the streets in their multi colour baggy snow jackets and beanies.

I had to get at least one good photo of my bike. Dylan

You have to make efforts to take photos when no one is around to take them. Set up on a tripod with 10sec timer.

The neck between the two lakes, no wind and the light is absolutly perfect. Coming over the hill looked like a real life painting.
